With a maximum width of only 500 feet, Qutang gorge was one mother of a stretch of river before mechanical power. Even in those days China had a lot of people and a need to keep them all employed. People called trackers used to make their living by hitching themselves to a rope and hauling cargo boats upstream. This is a tracker path hacked into the cliff walls hundreds of years ago.
