This society appeared to have a ruling class that lived in the great houses like Pueblo Bonito and a large population of working class that lived in small farmsteads along the valley bottom. One guy (David E. Stuart, author of Anasazi America) thinks perhaps the ruling class was overthrown when the people got fed up with paying taxes for rituals that weren't working any more. Sounds reasonable to me.
