We came down off the Mesa and went into Cortez to eat at Nero's (hunting and gathering since 1982). It was an excellent meal. We also stopped off at the Anasazi Cultural Center where they had this recreation of a hogan. The hogan is a traditional dwelling still in use by the Navajos. What interested me was this roof detail, as it is supposed to be the same technique used to roof over the kivas in the cliff dwellings. Logs are placed on main support posts (pilasters) and then each additional layer is smaller in diameter, creating a domed interior. Very spacious and practical. |
