The guys were carrying their food for the day as well as their journaling materials and disposable camera (neither of which were touched except under direct command.) Still, I didn't want them to dump their canoes, mainly because of the cold. Even after repeated screams and threats, Cody could not resist standing up in the canoe.

I really didn't care if they dumped their canoes - the danger to life was minimal. My biggest fear was that they would find something new to complain about. They actively sought situations to make things worse so they could draw attention to themselves. One of my fondest memories is crabbing with them a couple of years ago. Every time I wasn't looking directly at him, Ryan would say "Ow! That crab pinched me!" Then, one time he screamed like a banshee and hopped around. That time I knew he was telling the truth.
