Just as we were pulling into Everglades City, this manatee (family Trichechidae, genus Trichechus) came swimming by - see those ripples? I wouldn't even have seen it if David hadn't pointed it out. They seem to exists about 2 inches below the surface - and even when it came up to breath I doubt its snout came more than an inch out of the water. No wonder they get run over by boats all the time.
