Once the mast was taken care of, I turned to on my leeboard. I made it from a 36" long 1x12. I wanted the leeboard surface area to be between 4% and 7% of the sail size, and this one has about 2sqft of the surface in the water - 5%, which is a little on the light side (I had originally planed on a 30sqft sail.)
