We think this is where the artist planned for the monument-viewing platform - you get a much better view of all the faces. The park rangers said there was a major re-work of the park in the early 90's, and I know the cafeteria where Cary Grant faked his death was torn down. I expect the viewing platform was moved because this place requires a little more walking than where the platform is now.
