Midnight on Friday, March 12, 18 hours after we started that day, we landed at the finish. Oh happy day!
It hadn't been easy. We ended up sailing 70 miles, most of it beating against the wind and waves as we fought our way down to the Keys. Mike was at the helm the whole time while plotted a course that would carry us as close to the wind as we could run.
We had a reef in the sails in anticipation of the heavy winds NOAA had predicted, but they never materialized.
We reached the Keys around the area of Long Key just as the sun was setting. The ICW of Florida does not have buoys spaced all along the length, like they do in Texas. I had to quickly plot in each waypoint on my GPS, then point Mike onto the proper course. We were looking for blinking red lights against the lights as they were backlit by the towns and highway.
It's not that the navigation was tricky, just that it was tense. We were trying to follow a 30-yard wide channel that had extremely shallow water on either side.
When we came around the final islet and pointed towards the lights of the finish, I was one happy dude, lemme tells ya.
