There is no interpretation for the Eagle Dance, it is a celebration of the eagle. Young Hopis will capture eagle chicks and raise them in their homes so they can collect their feathers without killing them. There is a neat legend about a boy who fell in love with his eagle and eventually escaped with her to live in the clouds. He strays with some dead girls he meets and is kicked out of the eagle village. As his wife is carrying him back to his pueblo, she remembers his infidelity, gets mad, and drops him. He falls to his death, landing in the center of the pueblo he had tried to escape from. The moral: Be true to your home. (I altered significant portions of this legend, which I read in "Pueblo Gods and Myths") |
